As a professional, entrepreneur or small business owner, you have many demands on your time.  Each day presents opportunities to spend time doing those things that you do well, activities that will grow your business and give you energy, as well as those things you don’t particularly like, aren’t particularly good at, and sap a great deal of energy from you.  You have the additional personal responsibility to ensure that your business is running smoothly, effectively, and remaining profitable.

Often, the needs calling out to you from your business can pull you away from taking time to think about your personal goals and strategically planning for your business growth.  Even if you are a solo-preneur, it does not mean you can ignore your own need for planning and goal setting.  It is vital that you know “who” you want to be as a business, firm or solo practice.  It is not possible to be all things to all people, having a clear vision of who you are or want to be in your marketplace will give you the freedom to focus on what you do best.  If you don’t, you’ll soon find your business running YOU, instead of you running your business.

Taking the time to define your short and long-term goals and committing to paper a workable plan to achieving those goals will put you in the driver’s seat of your success.  For the busy professional, this can be difficult.  It is often the crucial step that is overlooked.  The process of developing your goals, and subsequently the strategic plan for your business, can prove to be a liberating and energizing experience.  By truly understanding and committing to your vision and your goals, you will clearly know who you are and more easily identify those activities that could distract you from doing your best work.  You’ll avoid a great number of mistakes possessing that clarity of purpose.  In focusing a critical eye on the “what” and “how” of your activities, you’ll more clearly see the gaps in your business and take the steps necessary to not only overcome the obstacles to growth,  but then to reach for that next level of your success.  Clearly knowing what is and is not working, you’ll be better equipped to look to those around you who are best suited to support you on your path to success:  a personal assistant, current or new team members, a consultant or business specialist, strategic alliance, or possibly a new outsource partner.  You do not need to do it all yourself!

By choosing to bring your personal and professional goals into alignment with your values, you will find greater sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction.  After all, when you started your business, you clearly wanted to be the captain of your own ship, to have choices and options for your future.  By embracing your leadership role and planning accordingly, you will do better and more meaningful work and experience a better quality of life with those you care about most. Your business will benefit from your ability to bring a more balanced approach to the work you do each day.
